United East Athletes of the Week - December 9, 2024

LATHAM, N.Y. - The United East conference has announced its Athletes of the Week for December 9, 2024.  Today will include Athletes of the Week for Men’s and Women’s Basketball.  This week’s selections included contests from Monday, December 2 through Sunday, December 8.  A total of 4 student athletes were recognized for their performances.

  • Offensive Player of the Week

    Jordan Carpenter / Gr / Penn State Harrisburg / Chester, Va. / Matoaca HS / University of Mary Washington

    Jordan Carpenter had another big week for Penn State Harrisburg. She scored a program record 34 points and added 18 rebounds in a setback at Gallaudet on Wednesday night before finishing with 23 points and 16 rebounds in a loss against Penn State Abington on Saturday. For the week, she averaged 28.5 points and 17 rebounds per game. 

    This is the fourth United East Player of the Week award for Carpenter this season, who has previously won for the weeks of November 18, 2024, November 25, 2024, and December 2, 2024.  This season, Carpenter leads the United East averaging 22.0 points per game, 12.1 rebounds per game, and is shooting 61.5 % from the field. Nationally, Carpenter ranks 4th in double-doubles with six, 8th in offensive rebounds per game with 5.5, 10th in field goal percentage, 16th in points per game. 16th in total rebounds, and 18th with rebounds per game.

     

    Defensive Player of the Week

    Alexa Osafo-Mensah / Jr / Bryn Athyn College / Charles Town, W.V. / Washington HS

    Osafo-Mensah led the Lions to a perfect 3-0 week and held opponents to 42 PPG. She led the way with 2 double doubles in three games. Osafo-Mensah pulled down 32 total rebounds while blocking 9 shots and registering 2 steals. The junior forward helped extend the Lions win streak to six and row. She averaged 10.3 PPG, 10.7 RPG, and 3 BPG across the three games this week.   

    This is the first Player of the Week award for Osafo-Mensah who is currently tied for second in the United East with 15 total blocks and an average of 1.7 per game.  Additionally, Osafo-Mensah is 14th in the league with 74 total rebounds for an 8.2 per game average.

  • Offensive Player of the Week

    Tye-Rell Monroe / Sr / Saint Elizabeth University / Rio Rancho, N.M. / Albany (NY) HS / SUNY Adirondack

    In a 1-1 week for the Eagles, Monroe was a driving force averaging 32 PPG across two games this week.  Against Wilson he netted 35 points and at Keystone, Monroe chipped in 29 points to pick up the victory on the road. Monroe would also tally five assists, four steals, and 11 rebounds. Monroe was able to go .500 for the field this week and was able to go .375 from three-point range.

    This is the second Player of the Week award for Monroe, who previously won for the week of November 27, 2023.  Monroe was named First-Team United East Skye Division selection in 2023-24 after starting all 29 games and averaging 17.5 points and 5.6 rebounds per game.

     

    Defensive Player of the Week

    Yassine Idrissa / FY / St. Mary’s College of Maryland / Rockville, Md. / T.S. Wootton HS

    Yassine Idrissa helped the Seahawks extend their win streak to five as Yassine put up 36 points, 23 rebounds, nine blocks, three assists, and two steals. He came close to a triple-double in the team's 70-67 road win over Notre Dame (Md.) with 16 points, nine boards (five defensive), and career-best eight blocks. Yassine then put up his third double-double of the season with career-bests of 20 points and 14 caroms (six defensive) in SMCM's come-from-behind 77-65 win over Valley Forge. He also picked up a career-high two steals against UVF. 

    This is the first Player of the Week award for Idrissa who currently leads the United East in blocks per game (2.5), is fifth in the United East averaging 8.6 rebounds per game, and sixth shooting 79.4% from the free-throw line (27-for-34).
