General 2/12/2024 2:30:00 PM United East Athletes of the Week - February 12, 2024 LATHAM, N.Y. - The United East conference has announced its Athletes of the Week for February 12, 2024. This includes Athletes of the Week for both the Skye and Volt Divisions in Men’s and Women’s Basketball as well as Men’s Volleyball. This week’s selections included contests from Monday, February 5 through Sunday, February 11. A total of 10 student-athletes were recognized for their performances. Men’s Basketball Offensive Player of the Week - Skye Division Darryl Garib / Sr / Wilson College / Dallas, Tx. / Forest Park HS Garib helped the Phoenix move into first place in the Skye Division with a pair of 20+ point games in wins against Bryn Athyn and Cairn on the road. He opened with a 26-point effort against the Lions and pulled down eight rebounds to help the Blue and White win by 10. He followed up with 23 more points after he went 7-of-13 from the field. At the free throw line across both games, he went a combined 19-of-25. He was also consistent on the glass with eight rebounds at Bryn Athyn and nine more at Cairn. On the week, Garib averaged 24.5 points per game and 8.5 rebounds per game and is currently third in the United East averaging 21.4 points per game. Garib was a 2022-23 First Team All-Conference honoree as well as Player of the Week six other times in his career; November 13, 2023, January 30, 2023, January 23, 2023, December 12, 2022, February 7, 2022, and January 24, 2022 Defensive Player of the Week - Skye Division Ibraheem Bundu / Sr / Wilson College / Bowie, Md. / Largo HS Bundu helped the Phoenix go 3-0 on the week with a pair of wins against one of the top offensive teams in the league in Cairn and another against first place Bryn Athyn. On Monday he helped the Phoenix limit the Highlanders to their lowest point total of the season and second-lowest shooting percentage on the year. He was also responsible for guarding one of the conference's top offensive players in Derian Bradford and helped limit him to well below his average with just 11 points. He followed up with eight rebounds and a block in a 10-point win against the Lions. In the second game with the Highlanders, he added five more rebounds and blocked five shots to help Wilson move into first place in the division. On the week Bundu blocked eight shots and currently leads the United East with 44 total blocks while averaging 1.8 per game. This is the second Player of the Week honor for Bundu who previously won for the week of January 22, 2024. Offensive & Defensive Player of the Week - Volt Division Donyae Baylor-Carroll / Sr / Penn State Harrisburg / Harrisburg, Pa. / Milton Hershey Donyae Baylor-Carroll had another monster week in a pair of Penn State Harrisburg victories. The senior poured in a game-high 31 points on 64.7 percent shooting (11-of-17) and 50 percent shooting from 3-point range (4-of-8) to surpass the 1,800 mark for his career in a 15-point win over Penn State Abington on Wednesday night. He added a game-best six steals and six assists to go along with four rebounds and a block. The guard followed it up by netting a game-high 17 points on 50 percent shooting, dishing out a game-best seven assists, and swiping a game-high four steals in a 21-point victory over St. Mary’s (Md.) on Saturday that clinched a regular season conference title for the program and extended its recent win streak to 10 in a row. For the week, Baylor-Carroll averaged 24 points per game on 58.1 percent shooting from the field and 46.2 percent shooting from beyond the arc to go along with 6.5 assists and five steals per contest. This is the sixth Athlete of the Week honor for Baylor-Carroll this season (February 5, 2024, January 8, 2024, December 11, 2023, November 27, 2023 and November 13, 2023). Women’s Basketball Offensive Player of the Week - Skye Division Taylor Hinson / Jr / Cairn University / Carney’s Point, N.J. / Collingswood HS Hinson dropped a pair of double-double performances this week, first on Wednesday night, she netted 26 points with 18 rebounds in the Highlanders' 97-60 win over Keystone, shooting 10-18 from the field and a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line, adding five assists. On Saturday, Hinson scored 27 points and 19 rebounds, including seven offensive boards. These marked Hinson's 10th and 11th double-doubles of the season, totaling 30 in her career as she sits 19th on the active career leaders list for double-doubles. Hinson was a second team all-conference performer in 2023-24 and currently sits seventh in the United East averaging 18.0 points per game and eighth with 9.2 rebounds per game. This is the fifth Player of the Week honor for Hinson who previously won for the weeks of January 30, 2023, January 16, 2023, December 12, 2022, and November 15, 2021. Defensive Player of the Week - Skye Division Adrianna Stricek / So / Wilson College / Harrisburg, Pa / Trinity HS Stricek had another super week as she recorded her 12th and 13th double-doubles of the season while helping Wilson secure a postseason bid with a win over Cairn on Saturday. She did that all while shooting .762 (16-of-21) from the field. She opened the week with 14 points and 13 rebounds in a close contest at Bryn Athyn. Although the Phoenix fell short against the Lions, Stricek came back even stronger against the Highlanders with 26 points after she went 11-of-14 from the field and pulled down 16 boards. She was multi-dimensional in her game as well with six total assists and five steals on the week. This is the third Athlete of the Week this season for Stricek who won for the week of December 18, 2023 and December 4, 2023. In the 2022-23 season, Stricek was the CSAC Rookie of the Year as well as an Honorable Mention honoree in addition to a Defensive Player of the Week nod for the week of February 6, 2023. Offensive Player of the Week - Volt Division Cassidy Perry / Sr / Gallaudet University / Frederick, Md. / Maryland School for the Deaf Perry finished the week with 45 points, 28 rebounds (16 defensive), nine assists, five blocks and one steal in two wins for the Bison. The nation's No. 5 player in field goal percentage (60.1 percent) added to her ranking after she made 19 of 25 shots (76.0 percent) from the field in two games. Perry averaged 14 rebounds per game last week as she ranks ninth in Division III for rebounds per game (12.8) and seventh in defensive rebounds per game (8.9) this season. Perry scored 29 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in a 79-72 road win at St. Mary's College of Maryland. Perry added three blocks, six assists and one steal in 36 minutes played. Perry made quick work of her time last Saturday at Penn St.-Berks as she scored 16 points and 13 rebounds for her 13th double-double this season (ranked 18th in D3). Perry added three assists and two blocks in 18 minutes played in an 83-56 road win to lock up the No. 2 seed in the upcoming United East-Volt Division tournament. This is the 17th Player of the Week honor on the basketball court for Perry who was a First Team All-Conference honoree in 2021-22 and 2022-23, in addition to Rookie of the Year and Second Team honors in 2019-20. Defensive Player of the Week - Volt Division Kaya Mobley / Jr / Penn State Abington / Coopersburg, Pa. / Penn St.-Lehigh Valley In a 1-1 week for the Nittany Lions, Mobley averaged 12.5 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 1.5 blocks per game while scoring 11.5 points per contest. At Penn State Harrisburg, Mobley finished with 14 rebounds and eight points and followed that up with her third double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds against Penn College while blocking two shots and had four steals against the Wildcats. Mobley is currently 11th in the United East averaging 8.5 rebounds per game and is 3rd with 4.6 assists per game. This is the second Player of the Week honor for Mobley who previously won for the week of January 22, 2024. Men’s Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week Clay Confer / So / University of Valley Forge / Mill Hall, Pa. / Confer continued his efficient play this week, as he stays at #3 in the conference in hitting percentage, hitting .357 and .417 as the Patriots went 1-1 on the week against York and Neumann. Confer also picked up up 5 aces in two games, sitting at #23 in the nation in aces per set. Confer is also sitting at #25 in the country for hitting percentage. This is the first Player of the Week honor for Confer. Defensive Player of the Week Jason Raymond / Jr / Pratt Institute / Blacklick, Oh. / Gahanna Lincoln HS Raymond was the top point collector for Pratt totaling 14 kills on .195 hitting with 10 blocks (four solo) in a four-set battle with CCNY and a five-set marathon with St. Joseph's (Brooklyn). This is the third Player of the Week honor for Raymond, who previously won for the weeks of March 21, 2022 and February 20, 2023.
