United East Athletes of the Week - February 13, 2024

LATHAM, N.Y. -  The United East conference has announced its Athletes of the Week for February 13, 2024.  This includes Athletes of the Week for both Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and Field.

This week’s selections included contests from Monday, February 5 through Sunday, February 11.  A total of 4 student-athletes were recognized for their performances. 

 
 
Men’s Indoor Track & Field

Track Athlete of the Week
Eric Gregory / Sr / Gallaudet University / Metairie, La. / East Jefferson HS

Gallaudet All-American senior sprinter Eric Gregory lowered his indoor school record in the 60-meter dash on Saturday at the Joe LaRocco Invitational in the Cregger Field House hosted by Roanoke College.  Gregory lowered his 60-meter dash time down to 6.89 seconds as he finished fourth overall in the event. Gregory's previous best time was 6.91 seconds set last month (Jan. 26) at the VMI Invitational. In a longer event, Gregory won the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.74 seconds. GU's 4x400 meter relay team of Gareth Ashton (Austin, Texas), Trey Johnson (Kyle, Texas), Walter Douglas (Sanford, Fla.) and Gregory came in sixth with a time of 3:36.01.  Currently, Gregory ranks nationally in the following events; 200-meter dash (2nd), 400-meter dash (17th), 60-meter dash (28th). He also posted the fastest time in the 300-meter dash (33.27 seconds) in NCAA Division III history earlier this season. That event is not one that is run at the NCAA championships.
This is the 10th Athlete of the Week honor for Gregory who is a two-time NCAA Division III National Champion (400m; 2022 & 2023; outdoors) as well as a four-time All-American.
 
Field Athlete of the Week
Andrew Bibbs / So / Gallaudet University / Columbia, S.C. / South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind

Gallaudet University jumper Andrew Bibbs had a busy Saturday afternoon at the Joe LaRocco Invitational in the Cregger Field House hosted by Roanoke College. Bibbs participated in three different jumping events. Bibbs placed 10th in the high jump when he cleared 1.74 meters, posted a 12th place finish in the triple jump (11.92 meters) and finished 19th in the long jump (5.61 meters).  This is the second Athlete of the Week honor for Bibbs, who previously won for the week of March 28, 2023.
 


Women’s Indoor Track & Field

Track Athlete of the Week
Oceana Brown / FY / Gallaudet University / Miami, Fl. / Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind

Gallaudet University first-year sprinter Oceana Brown (Miami, Fla.) broke two of her school records here Saturday at the Joe LaRocco Invitational hosted by Roanoke College. Brown placed third in the 60-meter dash and second in the 200-meter dash, Wetzel placed second in the high jump in the Cregger Center. Brown posted a record time of 7.82 seconds in the 60-meter dash which improves on her previous record time of 7.92 that happened last Sunday (Feb. 4) at the Richard Drake Invitational. Brown's time of 26.35 seconds in the 200-meter dash also erased her old record mark of 26.47 that happened last Sunday (Feb. 4) at the Richard Drake Invitational.  This is the third Athlete of the Week honor for Brown, who previously won for the week of February 6, 2024 and January 23, 2024.
 
Field Athlete of the Week - Skye Division
Hannah Wetzel / Sr / Gallaudet University / Fremont, Ca. / California School for the Deaf - Fremont

Gallaudet senior jumper Hannah Wetzel (Fremont, Calif.) broke her five-year-old school record here Saturday at the Joe LaRocco Invitational hosted by Roanoke College. Wetzel placed second and cleared 1.65 meters (5 feet, 5 inches) in the high jump to set a new school record that erased her old record mark of 1.43 meters (4 feet 8.25" inches) that happened back on Feb. 2, 2019, at the Frank Colden Invitational at Collegeville, Pa. Wetzel's 1.65 meter mark is tied for 17th nationally in Division III this season.  It was a busy day for Wetzel as she participated in four total events. Wetzel finished second overall in the triple jump with a mark of 10.93 meters. Wetzel also finished eighth overall in the long jump with a mark of 5.04 meters. Over on the track, Wetzel finished 11th overall in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.17 seconds. This is the sixth Athlete of the Week honor for Wetzel, who previously won for the weeks of February 6, 2024, December 12, 2023, May 2, 2023, April 25, 2022, and March 28, 2022 on top of the CSAC Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year award in 2023.
