General 3/19/2024 10:00:00 AM United East Athletes of the Week - March 19, 2024 LATHAM, N.Y. - The United East conference has announced its Athletes of the Week for March 19, 2024. Today will include Athletes of the Week for Women’s Tennis, Men’s Tennis, Women’s and Men’s Outdoor Track and Field. This week’s selections included contests from Monday, March 11 through Sunday, March 17. A total of 6 student-athletes were recognized for their performances. Men’s Tennis Player of the Week Boris Palmade / So / St. Mary’s College of Maryland / Bethesda, Md. / Walt Whitman HS Boris Palmade notched a 3-1 record during the Seahawks' Spring Break trip down in Hilton Head, South Carolina. Palmade tallied a 6-2, 6-2 win over Cornell College's Alexander Hadler-Strumlauf at No. 1 singles. He picked up an 8-6 win with doubles partner, Nick Rohr, over Maryville's Jackson Meyer and James Smith at No. 1 doubles. Palmade also won 6-2, 7-5 over Maryville's James Smith at No. 1 doubles. The Seahawks went 1-1 in Hilton Head with a 5-4 win over Maryville on the last day. This is the second Player of the Week nod for Palmade, who previously won for the week of April 4, 2023, as well as 2022-23 United East Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year, and First Team at No. 1 Singles and No. 1 Doubles. Women’s Tennis Player of the Week - Volt Division Cleopatra Solomon / FY / St. Mary’s College of Maryland / Cleopatra Solomon posted a 3-1 week for the Seahawks. Solomon partnered with Amber Manspeaker to notch an 8-4 win over Cornell College's Mac Graves and Makayla Johnson at No. 1 doubles before fighting for a 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (10-7) win over Tansy Graves at No. 1 singles. She also picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles over Maryville's Elizabeth Shwaiko after dropping an 8-1 decision to Shwaiko and Katelyn Cook at No. 1 doubles. This is the first Player of the Week honor for Solomon. Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Track Athlete of the Week Brittney Douglas / Sr / St. Mary’s College of Maryland / Port Republic, Md. / Calvert HS Brittney Douglas was part of the third place 4x800m relay, which set a school record of 10:10.96 while finishing 19th in the 800m run in 2:27.04, which ranks eighth in the Mid-Atlantic region. Douglas also ran on the 11th-place 4x400m relay which set a school record in 4:18.02. This is the first Athlete of the Week nod for Douglas, who recently won the 800m at the United East Indoor Championships. Field Athlete of the Week Jillian Zukley / FY / St. Mary’s College of Maryland / Severna Park, Md. / Severna Park HS Jillian Zukley qualified for the All-Atlantic Region Track & Field Conference Outdoor Championships in the shot put. Zukley picked up a sixth-place finish in the shot put with a school record and personal-best throw of 12.27m, which ranks second in the Mid-Atlantic region, fourth in the AARTFC, and 14th in Division III. She also notched a 49th-place finish in the hammer throw with a personal-best distance of 31.11m, which ranks fifth in the Mid-Atlantic region and seventh in the AARTFC. This is the second Athlete of the Week nod for Zukley, who previously won for the week of January 26, 2024. Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Track Athlete of the Week Ty Tindal / FY / St. Mary’s College of Maryland / Philadelphia, Pa. / Martin Saints Classical Ty Tindal qualified for the All-Atlantic Region Track & Field Conference Outdoor Championships in three events - 100m, 110m hurdles, and 4x100m - with his performance at the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational. Tindal captured the preliminaries of the 110m hurdles with a school record and personal-best time of 15.60, which ranks third in the AARTFC, fourth in the Mid-Atlantic Region, and 29th in Division III. He also claimed fourth in the preliminaries of the 100m dash with a school record and personal-best time of 10.81, which ranks first in the Mid-Atlantic region, second in the AARTFC, and 16th in Division III. Tindal was also part of the 10th-place 4x100m relay, which set a school record in 42.97. He wrapped up the meet with a 21st-place finish in the 200m dash in a school record time of 22.19, which ranks first in the AARTFC, second in the Mid-Atlantic region, and 42nd in Division III. Tindal was recently named United East Rookie of the Year during the Indoor Championships after winning the 60m, coming in second in the Long Jump, and finishing in third in the high jump, 60m Hurdles, and 4x400 Relay. Field Athlete of the Week Zack Kralec / So / St. Mary’s College of Maryland / Monkton, Md. / Hereford HS Zack Kralec won the pole vault with a height of 3.96m at the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational in Myrtle Beach, S.C. His pole vault mark currently ranks second in the Mid-Atlantic region, third in the All-Atlantic Region Track & Field Conference, and 50th in Division III. Kralec also finished 34th with a school record and personal-best throw of 36.27m in the javelin throw, ranking him 13th in the region. This is the second Athlete of the Week nod for Kralec, who won for the week of January 23, 2024, and recently came in second in the pole vault at the United East Indoor Championships.
