United East Athletes of the Week - April 2, 2024

LATHAM, N.Y. - The United East conference has announced its Athletes of the Week for April 2, 2024.  Today will include Athletes of the Week for Women’s Tennis, Men’s Tennis, Men’s Golf, Women’s and Men’s Outdoor Track and Field.

This week’s selections included contests from Monday, March 25 through Sunday, March 31.  A total of 8 student-athletes were recognized for their performances.

 

Men’s Tennis

Player of the Week
Cooper Wheeler / FY / Penn State Harrisburg / Red Lion, Pa. / Red Lion HS

After dropping a pair of matches at Gettysburg on Friday, Cooper Wheeler led the charge for Penn State Harrisburg in an 8-0 victory over Lancaster Bible in the team's conference opener on Saturday. He combined with teammate Damir Cuturic to earn an 8-2 win in the No. 1 doubles matchup before rolling to a 6-0, 6-0 sweep in the top singles contest. This is the third Player of the Week award for Wheeler this year as he won previously for the weeks of October 10, 2023, and September 26, 2023.

 
 
Women’s Tennis

Player of the Week - Volt Division
Allison Wootton / FY / Penn State Harrisburg / Portage, Mi. / Portage Northern HS

After falling in two matches at Gettysburg on Friday afternoon, Allison Wootton helped lead Penn State Harrisburg to an 8-0 victory over Lancaster Bible in the team's conference opener the next day. The first year teamed with Breanna DeSantis to roll to an 8-0 sweep in the top doubles contest before securing a 6-0, 6-1 win in the No. 1 singles matchup.  This is the fourth Athlete of the Week awarded to Wootton who previously won for the weeks of October 10, 2023, October 2, 2023, and September 25, 2023.

Player of the Week - Skye Division
Naomi Sadowitz / Sr / Clarks Summit University / Miyankonojo, Japan / CBCA

Sadowitz picked up two wins this weekend as the Defenders opened the Spring 2024 season.  On Friday, Sadowitz picked up the win (6-2, 6-1) at No. 1 singles, as well as an (8-5) win at No. 1 doubles with Melanie Stabler for Clarks Summit’s two points in the afternoon against Notre Dame of Maryland.  Saturday, Sadowitz won the first set and battled through a tiebreak in the third set at No.1 singles before ultimately falling to St. Mary’s in a long tiebreak (1-6, 6-2, 15-13).  This is the first Player of the Week award for Sadowitz who earned a First Team honoree at doubles and a Second Team honoree at singles in the 2022-23 season. 

 
 
Men's Golf

Player of the Week
Kolin Grogesky / Jr / Penn State Berks / Exeter, Pa. / Exeter HS

Grogesky had a busy week with four rounds in four days across three tournaments as Penn State Berks opened the Spring 2024 season.  On Monday, Grogesky finished 5th out of 88 individuals (77; +5) at the Lebanon Valley Invite and followed it up with a 12th place finish out of 46 people (82; +10) at the Albright Invite on Wednesday.  This weekend, Grogesky finished 29th out of 103 individuals (79, 79, +15) at the Pennsylvania Classic hosted by Penn State Altoona at the Penn State University Blue and White Courses.  On the weekend, he averaged 3.95 shots on Par-4's and totaled 21 pars and 4 birdies for the two-day tournament.  This is the third Athlete of the Week award for Grogesky, who won for the weeks of October 24, 2023 and September 17, 2023.

 

Women’s Outdoor Track and Field

Track Athlete of the Week
Oceana Brown / FY / Gallaudet University / Miami, Fl. / Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind

Brown lowered her own school records last Saturday at the Seahawk Invitational hosted by St. Mary's College of Maryland. Brown posted a time of 12.22 seconds to win the 100-meter dash and lower her previous record time of 12.29 set a week prior. Brown won the 200-meter dash in 24.90 seconds to improve on her previous record time of 25.05 set a week prior at the Doc Jopson Invitational. Brown was a member of the 4x100 meter relay team that won the event in 51.78 seconds. This is the sixth Athlete of the Week honor for Brown this academic year, who was also named Indoor Rookie of the Year at the United East Indoor Championships in February.

Field Athlete of the Week
Hannah Wetzel / Sr / Gallaudet University / Fremont, Ca. / California School for the Deaf - Fremont

Wetzel improved on her school record in the triple when she lept 11.71 meters (38 feet, 5 inches) last Saturday at the Seahawk Invitational hosted by St. Mary's College of Maryland. Wetzel's previous mark of 11.27 meters, nearly two feet difference, took place last year at the GU Invitational. Wetzel also finished first overall in the high jump with a top leap of 1.55 meters (5 feet, 1 inch). Wetzel finished fourth overall in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.05 seconds. Wetzel was also part of GU's first place 4x100 meter relay team that posted a time of 51.78 seconds.  This is the ninth Athlete of the Week honor for Wetzel, who previously was named the CSAC Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year award in 2023 and United East Indoor Field Athlete of the Year award for 2024.
 


Men’s Outdoor Track and Field

Track Athlete of the Week
Ty Tindal / FY / St. Mary’s College of Maryland / Philadelphia, Pa. / Martin Saints Classical

Ty Tindal tallied three top-3 finishes at the 3rd Annual Seahawk Invitational. Tindal captured the 400m dash with a school record and personal best time of 49.79 (5th in region, 10th in AARTFC), knocking off the three-year old mark of 50.13 set by Avery Arizpe '24 on May 1, 2021. He was then part of the school record-setting 4x100 relay, which finished second in 42.26. They displaced the old mark of 42.97 from two weeks ago. He was a member as well of the 4x400 relay, which placed second in 3:31.36. Tindal also set the school record in the long jump with a personal-best distance of 6.39m (8th in region), besting the previous mark of 5.72m set by Amaun Hill '24 last year. This is the third Athlete of the Week award for Tindal, who was recently named United East Rookie of the Year during the Indoor Championships in February 2024.

Field Athlete of the Week
Liam Painter / FY / Gallaudet University / Edgewood, N.M. / East Mountain HS

Painter broke a 20-year-old Gallaudet school record in the pole vault last Saturday at the Seahawk Invitational hosted by St. Mary's College of Maryland. Painter cleared 4.40 meters (14 feet, 5.25 inches) to win the event. The old GU school record was 4.26 meters (14 feet even).  This is the second Athlete of the Week award for Painter, who previously won for the week of February 20, 2024.
