General 4/16/2024 10:00:00 AM United East Athletes of the Week - April 16, 2024 LATHAM, N.Y. - The United East conference has announced its Athletes of the Week for April 16, 2024. Today will include Athletes of the Week for Men’s Tennis, Women’s Tennis, Men’s Golf, Women’s and Men’s Outdoor Track and Field. This week’s selections included contests from Monday, April 8 through Sunday, April 15. A total of 8 student-athletes were recognized for their performances. Men’s Tennis Player of the Week Nick Rohr / Sr / St. Mary’s College of Maryland / Fairfax County, Va. / James W. Robinson HS Nick Rohr notched a 4-0 week as the Seahawks won both conference matches last week. Rohr started the week by partnering with Boris Palmade for an 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles over Cairn's Timothy Robinson Jr. and Michael Wilson. He then tallied a 6-0, 6-3 victory at No. 2 singles over Robinson as the Seahawks earned a 9-0 road win over Cairn. Rohr and Palmade went on to collect an 8-1 triumph at No. 1 doubles over Lancaster Bible's Caleb Cavaiani and Josh Jarvis. He followed that up with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Cavaiani at No. 2 singles, helping SMCM to a 9-0 win over LBC on Senior Day. In all, Rohr only dropped five games over four matches. This is the first Player of the Week for Rohr, who was named All-United East First Team at No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles for the 2022-23 season. Women’s Tennis Player of the Week - Volt Division Cleopatra Solomon / FY / St. Mary’s College of Maryland / Cleopatra Solomon helped the Seahawks to a pair of conference wins with a 4-0 week. Solomon partnered with Amber Manspeaker for an 8-6 triumph over Cairn's Reagan Griffith and Ersy Neal at No. 1 doubles. She then notched a 6-0, 6-2 win over Griffith at No. 1 singles as St. Mary's College posted a 6-3 road win over Cairn. Solomon teamed up with Manspeaker once again for an 8-2 victory over Lancaster Bible's Sarah Steckbeck and Jania Weist at No. 1 doubles. She finished out her week with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Steckbeck at No. 1 singles in SMCM's 6-3 win over LBC. This is the second Player of the Week award for Solomon, who previously won for the week of March 19, 2024. Player of the Week - Skye Division Reagan Griffith / FY / Cairn University / Doylestown, Pa. / Central Bucks East HS Griffith led the way in Cairn's match against Bryn Athyn on Tuesday with an 8-1 in in #1 doubles and proceeded to sweep her matchup in #1 singles 6-0, 6-0 on Cairn's way to clinching their first United East playoff berth. This is the first Player of the Week award for Griffith. Men’s Golf Player of the Week Peyton Mussina / Jr / Penn College / Montoursville, Pa. / Montoursville HS Mussina finished 2nd out of 69 players at the Northeast Shootout and t-14 in a 90-player field in Altoona this week as Penn College had a busy week on the links. Mussina opened the week at the Northeast Shootout in Wilmington, Del. with a first-round low score of 67 and followed up with an afternoon round of 74. He was one of two golfers below par on Monday and came back Tuesday morning shooting even par for a 212 (-1) total for the two-day, three-round tournament. On Friday, Mussina shot a 76 and a tie for 14th place. This is the sixth Athlete of the Week honor for Mussina (October 10, 2023, October 3, 2022, September 19, 2023, October 4, 2022 and October 25, 2022) who finished the 2022-23 season as a First Team All-United East honoree after a second-place finish at the league championship meet in April. Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Track Athlete of the Week Makayla Grace Weber / So / Penn State Harrisburg / New Berlin, Pa. / Mifflinburg HS At the Messiah Invitational on Saturday afternoon, Makayla Grace Weber won the 400m hurdles with an effort of 1:09.79 and qualified for the 100m hurdles final after posting a 16.84-second effort in prelims. Weber currently holds the top times this season in both the 100m hurdles and 400m hurdles across the United East. This is the first Athlete of the Week award for Weber. Field Athlete of the Week Jillian Zukley / FY / St. Mary’s College of Maryland / Severna Park, Md. / Severna Park HS Jillian Zukley collected a pair of third-place finishes in the Delaware State Invitational. Zukley finished third in the discus throw with a school record and personal-best throw of 37.72m (5th in Mid-Atlantic, 1st in United East) while taking third in the shot put with a throw of 11.45m. She also picked up a sixth-place finish in the hammer throw with a distance of 30.23m. This is the third Athlete of the Week nod for Zukley, who previously won for the weeks of March 19, 2024 and January 26, 2024. Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Track Athlete of the Week Collin Fitzgerald / FY / St. Mary’s College of Maryland / Annapolis, Md. / Broadneck HS Collin Fitzgerald set the school record in the 200m with a time of 21.70 (2nd in United East) to finish fourth at the Delaware State Invitational and also qualify for the All-Atlantic Region Track & Field Conference Outdoor Championships. Fitzgerald currently ranks fifth in the AARTFC in the 200m with 21.70. He then clocked another school record in the 100m with a time of 10.77 (2nd in United East) to finish seventh. Fitzgerald also ran the second leg of the seventh-place 4x100, who clocked a 45.03 to finish seventh. This is the first Athlete of the Week for Fitzgerald. Field Athlete of the Week Oluwa Kinti / FY / Penn State Harrisburg / Cumberland Center, Me. / Greely HS At the Messiah Multi and Invitational over the weekend, Penn State Harrisburg thrower Oluwa Kinti finished as the runner up in the discus and his top toss of 42.76 meters earned him the third-best mark in the event in program history. Kinti currently holds the 2nd-best marks in both the discus (42.76m; 140’ 3”) and shot put (13.53m; 44' 4.75”). This is the first Athlete of the Week for Kinti.
