General 4/23/2024 10:00:00 AM United East Athletes of the Week - April 23, 2024 LATHAM, N.Y. - The United East conference has announced its Athletes of the Week for April 23, 2024. Today will include Athletes of the Week for Men’s Tennis, Women’s Tennis, Men’s Golf, Women’s and Men’s Outdoor Track and Field. This week’s selections included contests from Monday, April 15 through Sunday, April 21. A total of 8 student-athletes were recognized for their performances. Men’s Tennis Player of the Week Boris Palmade / So / St. Mary’s College of Maryland / Bethesda, Md. / Walt Whitman HS Boris Palmade posted a 4-0 week as the Seahawks locked up the No. 1 seed in the upcoming United East Men’s Tennis Championships. In Wednesday's matchup with Harrisburg, Palmade grabbed an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles with partner Nick Rohr over Cooper Wheeler/Damir Cuturic before notching a 6-2, 7-6 (4) victory over Wheeler at No. 1 singles as the Seahawks won 5-4. He followed that up at Berks with an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles with Rohr over Muhammad Esmat/Jazae Maina-Itegi before beating Esmat, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles as SMCM won 7-2. This is the third Player of the Week nod for Palmade, who previously won for the weeks of March 19, 2024, and April 4, 2023. Pomade was the 2022-23 United East Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year, and First Team at No. 1 Singles and No. 1 Doubles. Women’s Tennis Player of the Week - Volt Division Allison Wootton / FY / Penn State Harrisburg / Portage, Mi. / Portage Northern HS Allison Wootton was a perfect 4-0 in singles play and teamed with Breanna DeSantis to go 4-0 in doubles action to lead Penn State Harrisburg to a 4-0 overall record last week. Thanks to her efforts, the team clinched the No. 1 seed on the Volt Division side in the upcoming United East Championship Tournament. This is the sixth Athlete of the Week awarded to Wootton who previously won for the weeks of April 9, 2024, April 1, 2024, October 10, 2023, October 2, 2023, and September 25, 2023. Player of the Week - Skye Division Ersy Neal / Jr / Cairn University / Wayne, Pa. / Delaware County Christian School Neal went 4-1 in singles matches this week, including a shutout win against Penn State - Berks on Thursday, and 4-2 in doubles play. On the season, Neal is 7-2 in singles play and partnered with Reagan Griffith to go 7-3 in doubles play. Neal earned First Team at doubles and Second Team singles in 2023 to go with a 2022 Honorable Mention nod. This is the third Player of the Week award for Neal, who previously won for the weeks of April 9, 2024 and April 25, 2023. Men’s Golf Player of the Week Peyton Mussina / Jr / Penn College / Montoursville, Pa. / Montoursville HS Placed second overall at the Gettysburg Spring Shootout over the weekend and helped the Wildcats to a seventh-place team finish. Led the field after the first round on Saturday with a 3-under 69 on the par 72, 6,794-yard Founders Course. Finished with a par-72 round on Sunday to finish with a course total of 141 (-3). Carded 11 birdies at the two-day event. This is the seventh Athlete of the Week honor for Mussina over his career in addition to finishing the 2022-23 season as a First Team All-United East honoree after a second-place finish at the league championship meet in April. Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Track Athlete of the Week Oceana Brown / FY / Gallaudet University / Miami, Fl. / Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind Brown helped to set two school records last Saturday in the final home meet for the Bison this season. The first-year sprinter posted a record time of 12.03 seconds in the 100-meter dash which improves on her previous record time of 12.19 seconds that happened on April 6, 2024, at the Bison Classic. Brown also ran in the 200-meter dash and recorded a time of 25.10 seconds. Brown placed first in both events. Brown was also part of the first place 4x100 meter relay team that broke a 1996 school record with a new time of 50.20 seconds to erase the old mark of 50.81 seconds. This is the seventh Athlete of the Week honor for Brown this academic year, who was also named Indoor Rookie of the Year at the United East Indoor Championships in February. Field Athlete of the Week Hannah Wetzel / Sr / Gallaudet University / Fremont, Ca. / California School for the Deaf - Fremont Wetzel set three school records in her final home meet of her career last Saturday at the Gallaudet University Invitational. Wetzel leaped 5.63 meters in the long jump to set a new school record that erased her old record mark of 5.41 meters that happened back on April 6, 2024, at the Bison Classic at Thomas O. Berg Track. She also improved on her school record in the high jump as she cleared 1.68 meters to place first in the event. Wetzel's previous school record mark was 1.65 meters that happened on April 12 at the Stevenson Invitational hosted by Stevenson University. Wetzel was also part of the first place 4x100 meter relay team that broke a 1996 school record with a new time of 50.20 seconds to erase the old mark of 50.81 seconds. This is the eleventh Athlete of the Week honor for Wetzel, who previously was named the CSAC Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year award in 2023 and United East Indoor Field Athlete of the Year award for 2024. Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Track Athlete of the Week Collin Fitzgerald / FY / St. Mary’s College of Maryland / Annapolis, Md. / Broadneck HS Collin Fitzgerald captured the 200m dash at the Hopkins/Loyola Invitational with a time of 22.10, beating out 46 other competitors. His time in the 200m now ranks as 11th in the region and 2nd in the United East. This is the second Athlete of the Week for Fitzgerald, who previously won for the week of April 15, 2024. Field Athlete of the Week Cameron Bragg / FY / Penn State Abington / Yorba Linda, Ca. / Yorba Linda HS Cameron Bragg finished sixth overall in the discus and broke his own school record after registering a distance of 135' 0" (41.14m) to break his previous record distance of 129' 7" (39.49m) set just last week at the Bill Butler Invitational. Bragg also competed in the shot-put event and finished with a distance of 33' 1" (10.08m). Bragg currently sits 4th in the Discus and 23rd in the Shot Put among all United East competitors. This is the second Athlete of the Week award for Bragg, who previously won for the week of April 9, 2024.
