LATHAM, N.Y. - The United East Conference has announced its 2024 Men’s Tennis All-Conference Teams. The All-Conference Teams are made up of six student-athletes representing singles competition and three doubles pairings with two separate All-Conference teams for this season. Three major awards have been handed out including Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year, and Coach of the Year.
Five out of the eight United East institutions that sponsor Men’s Tennis were represented across the two All-Conference teams and major awards. St. Mary’s College of Maryland and Penn State Harrisburg each had six individuals and/or doubles pairings across the two teams. Penn State Abington had three individuals on the teams while Penn State Berks had an individual and a doubles pairing on the All-Conference teams, respectively. Penn College also has one member on the All-Conference team.
Major Award Winners
Player of the Year - Boris Palmade (St. Mary’s College of Maryland)
Rookie of the Year - Cooper Wheeler (Penn State Harrisburg)
Coach of the Year - Sona Brymer (St. Mary’s College of Maryland)
Boris Palmade (Sr. / Bethesda, Md.) has been named the 2024 United East Player of the Year after leading the Seahawks to an undefeated season in league play. Palmade played #1 singles and #1 doubles with partner Nick Rohr and went a combined 10-0 across all conference play. No singles match in league play went to a third set and all doubles matches were won without a tiebreak needed. Palmade was the 2022-23 United East Player and Rookie of the Year while being voted to the First Team in both singles and doubles.
Cooper Wheeler (FY / Red Lion, Pa.) had an impactful first season of collegiate competition and has been named the 2024 United East Rookie of the Year. In league play, Wheeler went 4-2 in singles play with his only defeats coming from Player of the Year, Boris Palmade, and fellow first year and First Team awardee, Wenxu Gu from Penn State Abington. In doubles play, Wheeler partnered with Damir Cuturic to go 5-1 in conference matches with their only defeat coming to fellow First Team members Palmade and Nick Rohr from St. Mary’s. Wheeler was named United East Player of the Week four separate times across the academic year.
Sona Brymer guided the St. Mary’s College of Maryland to an undefeated regular season in 2024 and third-straight regular season conference championship for St. Mary’s Men’s Tennis. This is the fourth United East Coach of the Year award for Brymer who previously won in 2023 for both the Men’s and Women’s teams and recently was awarded the women’s Coach of the Year for the 2024 season.
