United East Athletes of the Week - April 30, 2024

LATHAM, N.Y. - The United East conference has announced its Athletes of the Week for April 30, 2024.  Today will include Athletes of the Week for Women’s and Men’s Outdoor Track and Field.

This week’s selections included contests from Monday, April 22 through Sunday, April 28.  A total of 4 student-athletes were recognized for their performances.
 


Women’s Outdoor Track and Field

Track Athlete of the Week
Oceana Brown / FY / Gallaudet University / Miami, Fl. / Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind

Brown was a member of Gallaudet's 4x100 meter relay team that posted a time of 51.78 to place 8th overall out of 13 teams at the Paul Kaiser Classic hosted by Shippensburg University last Saturday on a cold and rainy day. Brown ran the second leg of the relay in the second heat where the Bison finished first. In the preliminaries of the 100-meter dash, Brown posted a time of 12.49 seconds to qualify for the finals but due to the rain and wet track they did not run the finals. Brown was the only first-year runner in the Top 10 of the 100-meter dash preliminaries that featured 59 runners. Brown won the fourth heat of the 100-meter dash to qualify for the finals. This is the eighth Athlete of the Week honor for Brown this academic year, who was also named Indoor Rookie of the Year at the United East Indoor Championships in February.
 
Field Athlete of the Week
Hannah Wetzel / Sr / Gallaudet University / Fremont, Ca. / California School for the Deaf - Fremont

Gallaudet senior Hannah Wetzel (Fremont, Calif.) led the Bison team and finished second overall in triple jump as she leaped 11.33 meters last Saturday at the Paul Kaiser Classic hosted by Shippensburg University on a cold and rainy Saturday. She placed 12th overall in the long jump as she leaped 5.16 meters. She also participated in the 4x100 relay that finished 8th overall with a time of 51.78 seconds. This is the twelfth Athlete of the Week honor for Wetzel, who previously was named the CSAC Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year award in 2023 and United East Indoor Field Athlete of the Year award for 2024.
 


Men’s Outdoor Track and Field

Track Athlete of the Week
Eric Gregory / Sr / Gallaudet University / Metairie, La. / East Jefferson HS

Gallaudet University All-American sprinter Eric Gregory (Metairie, La.) won all four races he participated in: 100-, 200-, 400-meter dash and 4x100 relay with times of 10.68 seconds, 21.23 seconds, 47.89 seconds and 42.25 seconds, respectively, at the Paul Kaiser Classic hosted by Shippensburg University on a cold and rainy Saturday.  This is the 14th Athlete of the Week honor for Gregory who is a two-time NCAA Division III National Champion (400m; 2022 & 2023; outdoors) as well as a five-time All-American after finishing in 2nd at the 200m during the 2024 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field National Championships.

Field Athlete of the Week
Cameron Bragg / FY / Penn State Abington / Yorba Linda, Ca. / Yorba Linda HS

At the West Chester Last Chance Meet, freshman Cameron Bragg also recorded a top-five showing as he finished third in the discus event with a distance of 130' 8" (39.83m).  Bragg also competed in the shot put and finished 10th with a distance of 33' 8.75" (10.28m). This is the third Athlete of the Week award for Bragg, who previously won for the weeks of April 23, 2024, and April 9, 2024.
