General 4/9/2024 10:00:00 AM United East Athletes of the Week - April 9, 2024 LATHAM, N.Y. - The United East conference has announced its Athletes of the Week for April 9, 2024. Today will include Athletes of the Week for Men’s Tennis, Women’s Tennis, Men’s Golf, Women’s and Men’s Outdoor Track and Field. This week’s selections included contests from Monday, April 1 through Sunday, April 7. A total of 8 student-athletes were recognized for their performances. Men’s Tennis Player of the Week Cooper Wheeler / FY / Penn State Harrisburg / Red Lion, Pa. / Red Lion HS Cooper Wheeler earned four total wins in helping lead Penn State Harrisburg to two more victories last week. The first year went 2-0 in both singles and doubles action from the No. 1 spot in 9-0 sweeps over Penn College and Penn State Berks to keep the Lions undefeated at 3-0 in conference play. This is the fourth Player of the Week award for Wheeler this year as he won previously for the weeks of April 1, 2024, October 10, 2023, and September 26, 2023. Women’s Tennis Player of the Week - Volt Division Allison Wootton / FY / Penn State Harrisburg / Portage, Mi. / Portage Northern HS Allison Wootton went 4-0 last week and helped lead Penn State Harrisburg to a pair of 9-0 sweeps over conference foes Penn College and Penn State Berks. The first year made quick work of her opponents, winning both of her doubles matches 8-0 and securing 6-0, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-0 victories in singles action. This is the fifth Athlete of the Week awarded to Wootton who previously won for the weeks of April 1, 2024, October 10, 2023, October 2, 2023, and September 25, 2023. Player of the Week - Skye Division Ersy Neal / Jr / Cairn University / Wayne, Pa. / Delaware County Christian School Neal won four matches on Saturday, leading off with an 8-2, no. 1 doubles win, and 6-3 & 6-1 #2 singles win against Lancaster Bible College. In the afternoon, she secured a #1 doubles victory, 8-1, before 6-0 & 6-1 singles against Clarks Summit, leading the Highlanders to two sets of 9-0 wins on the weekend. Neal earned First Team at doubles and Second Team singles in 2023 to go with a 2022 Honorable Mention nod. This is the second Player of the Week award for Neal, who previously won for the week of April 25, 2023. Men’s Golf Player of the Week Pearse Lee / So / Rutgers-Camden / Cinnaminson, N.J. / Cinnaminson HS Pearse Lee earned medalist honors in a field of 46 individuals at the RU-Camden Raptor Spring Golf Invitational on Monday, April 1. Five of the nine participating teams were United East members and Lee bested them all with a 6-over par 77 to take home medalist honors over Jake Rotelle from Lancaster Bible by one shot. This is the first Player of the Week award for Lee. Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Track Athlete of the Week Gabby McDonald / FY / Cedar Crest College / Philadelphia, Pa. / Imhotep Charter McDonald broke the Cedar Crest program record in the 100-meter and 200-meter dash at the Muhlenberg Outdoor Invitational. She finished third in the 100-meter dash, clocking a time of 13.15 seconds and then took ninth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.50 seconds. She moved into fifth in the conference with her time in the 100-meter dash and eighth in the 200-meter dash. This is the first Athlete of the Week award for McDonald. Field Athlete of the Week Hannah Wetzel / Sr / Gallaudet University / Fremont, Ca. / California School for the Deaf - Fremont Gallaudet senior jumper Hannah Wetzel broke a 42-year-old school record in the long jump last Saturday at the Bison Classic. Wetzel leaped 5.41 meters to break the old mark of 5.31 meters set in 1982. Wetzel finished third in the long jump event but took first in the high jump (1.60 meters - which ties her own school record) and first in the triple jump (11.05 meters). Wetzel also finished seventh in the 200-meter dash with 26.52 time. She was also a member of GU's 4x100 meter relay team that placed second with a time of 50.98 seconds. This is the tenth Athlete of the Week honor for Wetzel, who previously was named the CSAC Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year award in 2023 and United East Indoor Field Athlete of the Year award for 2024. Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Track Athlete of the Week Eric Gregory / Sr / Gallaudet University / Metairie, La. / East Jefferson HS Gallaudet All-American sprinter won the 100-meter dash last Saturday at the Bison Classic that GU hosted. Gregory crossed the finish line in 10.59 seconds. He was also a part of Gallaudet's two first-place relay teams in the 4x100 (42.18 seconds) and 4x400 (3:26.05). The 4x100 time is a new school record, improving on the old mark of 42.45 set at last year's Gallaudet University Invitational. Gregory was part of that record last year. Gregory also tried his hand at the 800-meter run for the first time and took 11th with a time of 2:07.78 This is the 13th Athlete of the Week honor for Gregory who is a two-time NCAA Division III National Champion (400m; 2022 & 2023; outdoors) as well as a five-time All-American after finishing in 2nd at the 200m during the 2024 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field National Championships. Field Athlete of the Week Cameron Bragg / FY / Penn State Abington / Yorba Linda, Ca. / Yorba Linda HS At the Ursinus College Track & Field Festival over the weekend, freshman Cameron Bragg broke a pair of his own school records in the shot put and discus events. Bragg finished third overall, out of 27, in the discus event where he recorded a distance of 129 '3 " (39.39m). In the shot put, he finished eighth overall, out of 27, with a distance of 35'4" (10.77m). This is the first Athlete of the Week award for Bragg.
