HERSHEY, Pa. - The Penn State Harrisburg men’s tennis team topped St. Mary’s College of Maryland, 5-1, Saturday evening in the 2024 United East Championship Final. The win also solidifies the team’s automatic qualifier to the Division III NCAA Championship.
Harrisburg took the quick 3-0 lead as the squad won all three doubles matches. Andrew Schreck and Vik Patel cruised to an 8-0 win at third while Owen Ou and Derwin Merca took second by a score of 8-4. Cooper Wheeler and Damir Cuturic edged out their Seahawk foe at the top flight, 8-7.
In singles play, Max Esztergomi got St. Mary’s College on the board as he took the third flight, 6-3, 6-0. Schreck inched the Lions closer to victory as his 6-0, 7-6 win at fourth gave the team a fourth point. The match was then secured by Patel at sixth as he defeated his opponent 1-6, 6-3, 6-1.
