Penn State Brandywine’s Myeisha Matos Surprised with Moms in Coaching Grant from the Alex Morgan Foundation

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The United East Conference celebrates Penn State Brandywine Head Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Coach Myeisha Matos, who was honored as one of three national recipients of the Moms in Coaching Grant, presented by the Alex Morgan Foundation (AMF) in partnership with WeCOACH.

Matos received the $10,000 grant as a surprise during the WeCOACH Regional Workshop in Washington, D.C. on Monday, October 6. Soccer icon Alex Morgan appeared live via Zoom to personally announce the award to Matos and the two other recipients.

The Moms in Coaching initiative, launched by the Alex Morgan Foundation in 2024, recognizes and supports mothers in the coaching profession—helping them stay in the game by providing the resources and encouragement needed to thrive both personally and professionally.

Matos was nominated by Penn State Brandywine Athletic Director Bobbi Caprice. “I couldn’t be more thrilled for Myeisha! She has entered motherhood and transiting back to work gracefully. This grant will make a direct impact on Myeisha’s life,” Caprice said. “She is extremely deserving of this recognition. I’m so grateful to the Alex Morgan Foundation, WeCOACH, and the United East for continuing to provide incredible resources and opportunities for our coaches.”

When the announcement was made, Matos said she was in complete shock to hear her name called—and even more stunned when Alex Morgan herself appeared on screen. “I’m so happy and thankful! I am in complete shock. Still trying to process things,” Matos said. “Alex Morgan?! She’s a trailblazer for women in sports. This feels unreal. I’m extremely thankful to the Alex Morgan Foundation—this alleviates a lot of financial stress from my family and serves as a reminder that the work we do as coaches is important. You never know who’s watching and appreciating the impact you make.”

Matos expressed deep gratitude to Caprice for the nomination and to the foundation for recognizing the challenges and joys of coaching as a mom. “Super thankful for the nomination from Bobbi, and the foundation for choosing me and the two other grant recipients,” she said. “I am truly honored and will probably talk about Alex Morgan presenting me with the grant for a very long time! I can’t wait for the day I can explain to my son, Demi, the significance of this moment. We are surrounded by such love and support. This further proves—it takes a village.”

The United East Conference joins WeCOACH and the Alex Morgan Foundation in celebrating Coach Matos for her leadership, impact, and commitment to her student-athletes. Together, these organizations are championing and empowering women to succeed in two of life’s most important roles: as coaches and as moms.
