Seahawks Prevail in Overtime Thriller for the 2025 Title

LATHAM, N.Y. - The United East crowned a field hockey champion on Saturday afternoon as St. Mary’s College of Maryland defeated Penn State Harrisburg on the campus of St. Mary’s College of Maryland in double overtime.  With the win, St. Mary’s College has earned the automatic qualifier to the upcoming NCAA Championship.

The Seahawks will learn their host location and future opponent during the NCAA Selection Show which premiers on Sunday, November 9th at 9:00 p.m. on NCAA.com.

It was a hard-fought contest between St. Mary’s Seahawks and Penn State Harrisburg Lions, with both teams battling for control from the opening whistle. Harrisburg’s Ami Mattingly registered the first shot of the game, only to see St. Mary’s goalkeeper Sophia Kent make the save.

The Seahawks responded in the second quarter as Tori Hampton took St. Mary’s first shot, which was blocked, followed moments later by Morgan Knott’s attempt, which sailed high. The first half ended scoreless, setting the stage for an intense second half.

In the third quarter, St. Mary’s pushed offensively, peppering the Lions’ defense with multiple shots, but Harrisburg goalie Macenie Mulholland stood tall, keeping the Seahawks at bay. Heading into the fourth quarter, St. Mary’s held a 12-1 advantage in total shots and a 6-1 edge in shots on goal, along with a 5-1 lead in corner opportunities.

Harrisburg responded with a penalty corner just over a minute into the fourth, followed by a shot from Sadie Cook in the 49th minute. Despite several scoring opportunities, St. Mary’s could not break through, and the fourth quarter ended scoreless, forcing overtime.

In the first overtime, St. Mary’s took four shots to Harrisburg’s three, but neither team could find the back of the net. The second overtime mirrored the first until St. Mary's standout Emma Watkins delivered the game-winning goal in the 75th minute. Watkins finished with three shots on goal and was named the game’s MVP.

Mulholland led the Lions’ defense with 13 saves.
