United East Athletes of the Week - March 25, 2025

LATHAM, N.Y. - The United East conference has announced its Athletes of the Week for March 4, 2025.  Today will include Athletes of the Week will include Men's and Women’s Tennis as well as Men's and Women's Outdoor Track & Field. 

This week’s selections included contests from Monday, March 17 through Sunday, March 23. A total of six student athletes were recognized for their performances.

  • Women's Tennis Player of the Week

    Cleo Solomon / SO / St. Mary's College of Maryland / Waldorf, Md. / North Point

    Cleo Solomon won twice as the Seahawks opened conference action with a 7-0 win over Bryn Athyn. Solomon teamed up with Amber Manspeaker for a 6-1 win over Hunter Daum and Thea Keal at No. 1 doubles before posting a 6-0, 6-0 triumph over Keal at No. 1 singles.

    This is Solomon's first time being named Player of the Week of the season and third time in her career (03/19/24 | 04/16/24)

     

    Men's Tennis Player of the Week

    Wenxu Gu / SO / Penn State Abington / Nanjiang, Jiangsu, China / Laurel Springs School

    Abington went 2-0 this past week with both wins being of the shutout variety to improve to 5-0; the program's best start in its Division III era.  Gu went 4-0 on the week at the first doubles and first singles positions.  At DeSales University, Gu teamed up with Krishna Gurram to win their first doubles match, 7-5.  Gu went on to win his first singles match in straight sets, 6-2 and 7-6.  The Nittany Lions capped the week with a 7-0 victory at Lancaster Bible College to open United East play. Gu and partner Tripp Mangifesta won their doubles match, 6-3, before Gu went on to win his first singles match with ease at 6-0, 6-0. 

    This is Gu's first time being named Player of the Week of the season and second of his career (10/17/23)

     

  • Women's Outdoor T&F Track Athlete of the Week

    Molly Wagner / SR / Carlow University / Pleasent Hills, Pa. / Thomas Jefferson

    Wagner topped the United East Outdoor charts in a pair of events to kick off the spring season at the Marty Pushkin Invite held by West Virginia University. Wagner ran a 26.91 in the 200m which placed her seventh out 22 runners and first amongst Division III competitors. In the 100m, the sprinter timed a 12.98 which led all Division III runners and earned her ninth out of 30. Wagner also took part in the 4x100 relay which posted a time of 51.68.

    This is Smith's first time being named Player of the Week of her outdoor career.

     

    Women's Outdoor T&F Field Athlete of the Week

    Rocksann Smith / FY / St. Mary's College of Maryland / Baltimore, Md. / Baltimore City College

    Rocksann Smith smashed the school record in the javelin at the Virginia Wesleyan Spring Break Invite. Smith won the javelin with a throw of 35.98m (1st in UEC, 1st in region), destroying the previous record by 15.57m. With her performance in the javelin, she already qualified for the AARTFC championships. Smith also placed fourth in the high jump with a height of 1.48m (1st in UEC, 6th in region) while coming in seventh in the 100m hurdles in 20.38 (2nd in UEC, 18th in region). She also qualified for the AARTFC in the high jump as she sits seventh with her height. Smith finished 18th as well in the 800m in 2:57.44 (4th in UEC, 41st in region). 

    This is Smith's first time being named Player of the Week of her outdoor career.

  • Men's Outdoor T&F Field Athlete of the Week

    Sean Myron / SR / Penn State Harrisburg / Swiftwater, Pa. / Pocono Mountain East

    Myron competed in all four throwing events this past weekend at the Virginia Beach Spring Break Invitational, topping the United East charts in both the javelin and the discus. In the jav, Myron hurled it for a mark of 47.40m which earned him a bronze medal in a field of 22. He then picked up a silver medal in the discus as his toss of 38.54m earned him second out of 19 competitors. The Swiftwater, Pa. native continued to impress as he took home sixth (out of 11) in the hammer with a mark of 32.83 and fifth (out of 15) in the shotput with a mark of 12.26m.

    This is Myron's first time being named Player of the Week of her outdoor career.

     

    Men's Outdoor T&F Track Athlete of the Week

    Collin Fitzgerald / SO / St. Mary's College of Maryland/ Annapolis, Md. / Broadneck

    Collin Fitzgerald placed 4th in the 400m at the Virginia Wesleyan Spring Break Invite in 51.51 (1st in UEC, 7th in region) while taking 10th in the long jump with a distance of 5.83m (2nd in UEC, 16th in region). 

    This is Fitzgerald's first time being named Player of the Week this season and third time overall (04/23/24 | 04/16/24)
