United East Athletes of the Week - April 1, 2025

LATHAM, N.Y. - The United East conference has announced its Athletes of the Week for April 1, 2025.  Today will include Athletes of the Week will include Men's and Women’s Tennis as well as Men's and Women's Outdoor Track & Field. 

This week’s selections included contests from Monday, March 24 through Sunday, March 30. A total of seven student athletes were recognized for their performances.

  • Men's Golfer of the Week

    Gavin Fegley / SO / Penn State Harrisburg / Liverpool, Pa. / Greenwood

    Gavin Fegley led the way for Penn State Harrisburg in a pair of outings last week. The reigning United East Rookie of the Year earned a third-place finish at the LVC Spring Invitational hosted by Lebanon Valley on Monday, carding a +4 (76) to help the Lions record a runner-up finish out of 13 competing teams. The sophomore followed it up by earning a share of fifth place out of 92 total competitors when he shot a +2 (146) at the two-day Pennsylvania Classic hosted at Penn State University's Blue Course over the weekend. 

    This is Fegley's second time being named Player of the Week of the season (11/05/24).

  • Women's Tennis Player of the Week

    Cleo Solomon / SO / St. Mary's College of Maryland / Waldorf, Md. / North Point

    St. Mary's College posted two conference wins this past week with a 7-0 shutout of Notre Dame (Md.) and a 4-3 win over Penn State Harrisburg, the defending conference champions. Cleo Solomon won all four of her matches to help the team improve to 3-0 in league action. Cleo teamed up with Amber Manspeaker for a pair of wins at No. 1 doubles, taking down NDMU's Morgan Lookingland and Tam Truong, 6-1, before outlasting PSH's Breanna DeSantis and Allison Wootton, 7-5. In No. 1 singles action, Cleo blanked Truong, 6-0, 6-0, before notching a 6-2, 6-4 triumph over Wootton, the reigning Player of the Year.

    This is Solomon's second time being named Player of the Week of the season and fourth time in her career (03/25/25 / 03/19/24 | 04/16/24)

     

    Men's Tennis Player of the Week

    Muhammad Esmat / SO / Penn State Berks / Chapel Hill, N.C. / Ocale Oasis Internationale

    Esmat had a great week, helping the Lions pickup United East Conference victories over Lancaster Bible College and Penn College. Esmat went 2-0 in his #1 singles matches and 2-0 as part of the #1 doubles team. His performance was especially clutch in the Lions win over Penn College where his team was playing down a player. Esmat and his doubles partner Jazae Maina-Itegi battled back forcing a tiebreaker that they won 10-8. He then fought off a solid challange for the Wildcats #1 singles player, picking up a 6-3, 7-5 to earn another key team point. 

    This is Esmat's first time being named Player of the Week of the season and second of his career (10/03/23)

     

  • Women's Outdoor T&F Track Athlete of the Week

    Molly Wagner / SR / Carlow University / Pleasent Hills, Pa. / Thomas Jefferson

    Wagner had a great outing, pacing herself with Division I athletes at the Carnegie Mellon Invite this weekend. The graduate student bettered her conference-leading times in both the 100m and 200m while also helping Carlow secure the best times in both relays. Wagner placed 11th in the 100 with a time of 12.72 and was part of the 4x400 relay team that placed 14th with a time of 4:28.41. She placed 19th in the 200 with a time of 26.29 and was part of the 4x100 relay team that placed 7th with a time of 50.87.

    This is the second time in as many weeks that Wagner has earned Athlete of the Week honors.

     

    Women's Outdoor T&F Field Athlete of the Week

    Jillian Zukley / SO / St. Mary's College of Maryland / Severna Park, Md. / Severna Park

    Jillian Zukley captured three events at the Seahawk Invitational. Jillian won the shot put with a throw of 11.41m and then placed first in the discus throw with a mark of 32.45m, which ranks fifth in the league and 22nd in the Mid-Atlantic region. She also took first in the hammer throw with a distance of 37.16m, which comes in second in the United East and 22nd in the region.

    This is Zukley's first time being named Athlete of the Week this season and the third time in her career (03/19/24 | 04/16/24)

  • Men's Outdoor T&F Field Athlete of the Week

    Zack Kralec / JR / St. Mary's College of Maryland / Monkton, Md. / Hereford

    Zack Kralec won two events at the Seahawk Invitational. Zack came in first in the pole vault with a school record height of 4.8m, qualifying for the All-Atlantic Region Track & Field Conference Championships. His pole vault mark leads the conference, ranks second in the Mid-Atlantic Region, and fourth in the AARTFC. He also captured the javelin throw with a distance of 47.64m, which ranks third in the league and 18th in the region.

    This is Kralec's first time being named Athlete of the Week this season and second time of his career (03/19/24).

     

    Men's Outdoor T&F Track Athlete of the Week

    David Helms / FY / Lancaster Bible College / Lampeter, Pa.  / Lampeter-Strausburg

    Coming off an unbeatable end to the indoor season, Helms set another new record in the 5000-meter run with a time of 15:21.12 to rank him first in the conference and qualify for NCCAA Outdoor Nationals. He also ran a personal best in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:16.84 which is first in the conference. 

    This is Helms' first time being named Athlete of the Week of his outdoor career
