It was another memorable performance by David Helms as he claimed the Track Athlete of the Year for the second-straight season. The junior finished the day with a perfect five gold medals in five events. He got the day going in the first event, the 3,000m, finishing the race with a time of 9:30.26. Right after that, he picked up gold medal #2 in the Mile race, crossing the finish line with a time of 4:42.46.
In his shortest race of the day, the 800m, Helms edged out second place by less than a second to pick up a third gold. And his longest race of the day, the 5000m, had similar excitement as his time of 16:18.42 was less than two seconds quicker than the second place finisher. Helms ended his day with a win in the Distance Medley Relay, anchoring the team for a combined time of 11:48.91.
Solomon David may have had rookie status, but his performance looked far from it. The first year hit the podium in all four of his events, capturing two golds and two silvers. He garnered his first gold in the high jump as he leaped a height of 1.87 meters, tying a Championship meet record. He then set a new Championship record in the triple jump as his mark of 14.02m was nearly a meter longer than his next closest competitor. Rounding out the jumps pits, David took the silver in the long jump, leaping a distance of 6.38m.
On the track, David used his leaping abilities to earn a silver in the 60m hurdles, crossing the finish line with a time of 8.85. His marks in this race, the long jump and the triple jump were all personal bests.
Coach Potter picked up her first-ever Coach of the Year nod on the men’s side, guiding the team to their second-straight title. The Seahawks earned six gold medals on the day and saw multiple podiumed athletes in four events. She also coached Solomon David to two major awards.
