United East Rolls Out 2022 Baseball All-Conference & Major Awards

LATHAM, N.Y. - The United East has announced the Baseball All-Conference Teams for the 2022 season. All-Conference consists of a First and Second Team made up of 13 student-athletes (1 Catcher, 2 Corner Infielders, 2 Middle Infielders, 3 Outfielders, 2 Starting Pitchers, One Relief Pitcher, 1 Designated Hitter and one At-Large Selection).

The conference has also doled out its major awards, including Player of the Year, Pitcher of the Year, Rookie of the Year and Coach of the Year. Those were awarded to the following:

Player of the Year - Ryan McCarty (Penn State Abington)
Pitcher of the Year - Zach Gettys (Penn State Harrisburg)
Rookie of the Year - Chase Swain (Penn State Abington)
Coach of the Year - David Miller (Penn State Abington)

To say Ryan McCarty is having a good year at the plate is putting it lightly. The senior has absolutely dominated, leading both the conference and the nation in numerous statistical categories. Currently, McCarty leads all players in hits (95), slugging percentage (1.209), batting average (.552), RBI (85), runs (85), total bases (208), doubles (26) and home runs (27). This season, McCarty has registered multiple hits in 30 of the team’s 40 games and has recorded multiple homers in seven games. Perhaps his top performance came in the regular season finale as he went 6-for-7 in a win over Gallaudet, mashing four home runs.

Chase Swain has made an immediate impact in his first season at Penn State Abington, earning him Rookie of the Year honors. Swain’s .412 batting average is the fourth best in the United East which has been helped by his 77 hits which ranks fourth in Division III. The Salem, N.J. native has seen himself cross the dish a fair amount too this year, ranking only behind McCarty in the country for total runs (70). One of Swain’s top performances came early in the season on the spring break trip as the first year went 4-for-4 with four runs scored in a win over Rhode Island College.

Zach Gettys was a force on the mound this season for Harrisburg, earning him Pitcher of the Year honors. The senior amassed a record of 8-1 in 10 starts this season, leading the conference in victories. Those wins have come via the York, Pa,’s ability to pinpoint the ball, racking up a league-leading 82 punch outs this year (22nd most in the nation). Gettys denied opposing teams the chance to score all season, posting an ERA of 2.51 which ranked second in the United East. Gettys top outing may have been in a complete game shutout win over Penn State Berks where he punched out 11 while scattering just three hits.

Coach David Miller took the reins of the Abington program this year, steering them to a record of 31-9 overall and 17-4 in conference play. Miller guided his Nittany Lion squad to be the top scoring offense in the country as the team averages 12.7 runs per contest. That has come on the back of tremendous hitting as Abington currently leads the country in slugging percentage (.623), On-base Percentage (.479), total hits (536) and is second in batting average (.364). This year, Miller helped coach six players to All-Conference accolades including the Player of the Year and the Pitcher of the Year.
