United East Athletes of the Week | 3-27-23

LATHAM, N.Y. - Week 28 of the United East Athletes of the Week features eight student athletes from seven different member institutions. In women’s lacrosse, Mount Aloysius College swept the honor roll as Jordan Mason and Courtney Vought won Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week honors, respectively.

In men’s lacrosse, Penn College’s Quinn Caviola was tabbed the Offensive Player of the Week while Hilbert College’s Ryan Fitch earned Defensive Player of the Week honors.

On the baseball diamond, Hunter Merritt (Penn State Harrisburg) was named the Pitcher of the Week and Justin Fogel (Penn State Abington) was named the Player of the Week.

Rounding out the honor roll was Christina Elsbury from Gallaudet who earned Softball Pitcher of the Week honors and Phoebe Clemens from Lancaster Bible College who was named the softball Player of the Week.

Men’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week

Quinn Caviola

Penn College  |  Junior  |  Attack

Caviola was a constant source of offense for the Wildcats as Penn College went 2-0 on the week. In the win over Alvernia, Caviola found the back of the net once while assisting on a pair of other goals. He backed that with a three goals, five assist performance against La Roche University, helping PCT to their first conference win of the season. On top of his goal scoring, Caviola added three caused turnovers and a pair of groundballs.

Men’s Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

Ryan Fitch

Hilbert College  |  Junior  |  Long Stick Midfielder

Fitch did a little of everything for the Hawks, helping the squad to a 1-1 record on the week. In the loss to SUNY Poly, Fitch notched four groundballs while causing a pair of turnovers. He added three more CTs in the weekend win over Wells College while collecting 10 more groundballs. Fitch also pitched in on the restart, winning 34 of his 53 faceoffs taken.
 

Baseball Pitcher of the Week

Hunter Merritt

Penn State Harrisburg  |  Senior  |  Pitcher

Merritt collected his second Pitcher of the Week honor this year, tossing a gem in the win over Penn State Berks. The senior allowed just two hits over 6.0 innings of work, not allowing a single run during the span. Over that time on the bump, Merritt also fanned six of his 21 batters faced.

Baseball Player of the Week

Justin Fogel

Penn State Abington  |  Junior  |  Catcher / Outfield

Fogel picked up his second Player of the Week nod as he helped his squad go 3-1 on the week, including a trio of conference wins. The junior registered a hit in all four games, finishing the week with an average of .706 (12-for-17). Over that span, he tacked on seven extra-base hits, including four doubles, two home runs and a triple. Offense was on the Yardley, Pa. native’s mind as he racked up 13 RBI as well as nine runs scored. His top outing came in game one against Wells as he went 5-for-6 with five RBI.

Women’s Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

Courtney Vought

Mount Aloysius College  |  Sophomore  |  Defense

Vought helped anchor a Mountie defense that saw the team go 1-1 on the week. The sophomore had her top performance in the conference win over La Roche University as she caused a season-best four turnovers. She would also add six groundballs and two more in the early week setback to St. Vincent to give her eight on the week.

Women’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week

Jordan Mason

Mount Aloysius College  |  Sophomore  |  Defense

Mason tallied seven goals over two contests this week, helping the Mounties go 1-1. In the setback to St. Vincent College, Mason cashed in one goal but followed that with a career-best six in the win over La Roche University. Two of the goals against the Red Hawks also came on the free position. To add to her stat sheet, Mason also controlled three draws, scooped five groundballs and caused six turnovers.

Softball Player of the Week

Phoebe Clemens

Lancaster Bible College  |  Junior  |  Shortstop

Clemens was a menace at the plate for opposing pitchers, earning her second United East Player of the Week nod. The junior went 9-for-13 (.692) on the week, finishing the stint with a perfect 1.000 (7-for-7) average in the weekend series against Wells College. Clemens knocked four doubles and two triples over that time, without striking out once. She also drove in 10 runs while scoring 10 herself.

Softball Pitcher of the Week

Christina Elsbury

Gallaudet University  |  Freshman  |  Pitcher

Elsbury was electric from the circle this week, helping Gallaudet pick up two wins over conference-rival Wells College. In game one, Elsbury tossed a complete game (5.0 Inn.) one hitter against the Express, striking out nine in the process. She then returned in relief during game two, collecting a save as she struck out three and didn’t allow a hit through the final 2.0 innings.
