United East Athletes of the Week | 4-10-23

LATHAM, N.Y. - Week 30 of the United East’s weekly honor roll has been announced with eight student-athletes being selected from seven different member institutions. In men’s lacrosse Joshua Martel from St. Mary’s College of Maryland and Joseph Gorman from Hilbert College were tabbed the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively. 

In women’s lacrosse, SUNY Morrisville’s Alana McDonald was named the Offensive Player of the Week while St. Mary’s College’s Maddie Clemmer was named the Defensive Player of the Week. 

On the baseball diamond, Blake Greenly from Lancaster Bible College earned Player of the Week honors while Penn State Abington’s Brandon Hightower was selected as the Pitcher of the Week.

In softball, it was Mackenzie Sawdey (Penn State Harrisburg) who collected Pitcher of the Week honors while Maddie Hurst (Penn College) was named the Player of the Week.

Men’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week

Joshua Martel

St. Mary’s College of Maryland  |  Freshman  |  Attack

Joshua Martel had a career day as his 10 points helped the Seahawks capture a key conference win over Hilbert College. The first year was able to find the back of the net five times, while adding an additional five assists on the day. Martel also pitched in on the 50-50 balls, scooping up five groundballs in the contest.

Men’s Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

Joseph Gorman

Hilbert College  |  Junior  |  Defense

Gorman was a mainstay for the Hawks defense, playing a steady game despite the loss to St. Mary’s College. The junior defender was disruptive all 60 minutes, causing a game-high six turnovers. Gorman also was able to collect five groundballs during the contest.

Softball Player of the Week

Maddie Hurst

Penn College  |  Senior  |  Shortstop

Hurst was non-stop offense for the Wildcats, picking up a hit in all six contests as Penn College finished the week with a record of 5-1. The shortstop finished the week batting .455 (10-for-22) while notching three doubles, two triples and a home run. Over that span, Hurst also drove in four runs while scoring nine times herself. The high point of the senior’s week came in game one against Gallaudet as she went 4-for-4 with a double and a home run. Hurst also stole four bases over the course of the week.

Softball Pitcher of the Week

Mackenzie Sawdey

Penn State Harrisburg  |  Freshman  |  Pitcher

Sawdey excelled from the circle all week, picking up a 3-0 record along the way. The first year hurler tossed three complete games (21.0 IP) allowing just a single earned run over that time. Over her 80 batters faced, Sawdey scattered just eight hits and six walks. The Halifax, Pa. finished the week with 27 strikeouts, punching out a career-best 11 in a win over Gallaudet on Saturday.

Women’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week

Alana McDonald

SUNY Morrisville |  Junior  |  Midfield

McDonald picked up her second Offensive PotW nod this season as she registered a season-best nine points in the win over Wells College on Saturday. The junior sprung for six goals including one on the free-position attempt. She added three assists as the Mustangs scored a season-high 23 goals. Adding to her stat line, McDonald also controlled eight draws and picked up a single groundball.

Women’s Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

Maddie Clemmer

St. Mary’s College of Maryland  |  Junior  |  Goalie

Clemmer played the whole contest between the pipes for the Seahawks as the squad won their sole outing of the week against Lebanon Valley College. The junior turned aside 12 dutchman shots on the evening, tallying her sixth double-digit save outing of 2023. She’d also scoop up a career-best four ground balls as she earned her sixth win of the year.

Baseball Pitcher of the Week

Brandon Hightower

Penn State Abington  |  Senior  |  Pitcher

Hightower produced another tremendous outing on the bump as he helped his Abington squad down Penn State Berks on Saturday. The senior tossed 6.2 innings allowing just a pair of hits and five walks. Over that span, no Berks player reached home and were held to a team average of just .091. Hightower added to his strike total as well, picking up 11 punch outs. This is the third time Hightower has earned this award this season.

Baseball Player of the Week

Blake Greenly

Lancaster Bible College  |  Senior  |   Third Base

Greenly notched multi-hit games in four of the Chargers five contests last week, helping Lancaster Bible go 4-1. The senior finished the stint with an average of .542 (13-for-24), posting four doubles and a home run. Over that span, Greenly also drove in nine runs and produced four runs himself. The third baseman’s top outing came in the opener against Cairn as he went 4-for-5 with three doubles. Greenly also picked up a pair of stolen bags on the week.
