Penn State Brandywine to Join United East in Summer of 2024

LATHAM, N.Y. - Beginning July 1st, 2024, Penn State Brandywine will join the United East as its newest member. The Nittany Lions will bring the conference’s total core members to 18.

“Penn State Brandywine is thrilled to accept the invitation to join the United East Conference beginning with the 2024 – 2025 academic year,” commented Penn State Brandywine Chancellor, Dr. Marilyn J. Wells. “We would like to thank Stephanie Dutton, Commissioner, and the United East Presidents’ Council for their confidence in Penn State Brandywine and our Athletics program.  The United East Conference is an exceptional conference for Penn State Brandywine for many reasons—values alignment, geographic proximity, competitive athletic programs, competition with regional peers, and development of partnerships beyond athletics — all aimed at enhancing the student-athlete experience and value proposition of a higher education. Penn State Brandywine is excited and grateful for this next step in a long-standing aspiration!”

Located in Media, Pa., Brandywine brings with them 12 athletic programs, all of which are sponsored by the United East.  In the fall, the Nittany Lions will compete in men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball. Winter sees the newest member compete in men’s and women’s basketball while spring has Brandywine set to compete in baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s golf.

“We are truly excited to have Penn State Brandywine become the 18th member of the United East next fall,” added United East Commissioner, Stephanie Dutton. “Throughout the application process, Penn State Brandywine showed tremendous commitment to their pursuit of Division III membership and the values that we embrace as a division and a conference. We look forward to welcoming their student-athletes, coaches, and staff as full members of the United East, which is a conference that remains committed to evolving and finding ways to pave a new path as the largest conference in Division III.”

Formerly part of the Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC), the Nittany Lions competed under the umbrella of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA). Penn State Brandywine is currently completing its exploratory year as the institution pursues full NCAA Division III membership. Pending NCAA Division III approval later this spring, Brandywine will enter its first of three provisional years in the 2024-25 academic year.

“Joining the United East Conference marks a new era for Brandywine Athletics and is an essential milestone in our NCAA DIII exploratory year,” remarked Bobbi Caprice, Athletic Director at Penn State Brandywine. “We are very excited to be joining the United East Conference and extremely grateful for the invitation to join a strong group of regional public and private colleges and universities that share similar missions. We look forward to being active and engaged members within the United East Conference.”

Penn State Brandywine is a public commonwealth campus of the Penn State University system and has an enrollment of just over 1,200 enrolled students.
