Series Sweeps Highlights Baseball Championship Second Round

LATHAM, N.Y. - The Second Round of the United East Baseball Championship saw sweeps all around as all four series only needed two games to decide the weekend outcome.

No. 1 Keystone College, No. 2 Penn State Harrisburg and No. 3 St. Mary’s College of Maryland all took care of business on their home field while No. 5 Cairn University produced the only upset of the round. These four teams will now square off in a double-elimination tournament next weekend to determine the United East Champion.

No. 5 Cairn University at No. 4 Penn College

Game 1: Cairn def. Penn College, 12-5 (BOX SCORE)
The Wildcats opened up the scoring in the series as they ripped off two solo home runs in the second and third inning. Cairn tied things back up in the fourth as they plated a pair including one on an RBI double from Tyler Harris. The tie did not last long though as Penn College scored one run an inning over the next three frames. The Highlanders found their bats late though, plating five in the eighth and three more in the ninth.

Designated hitter Andrew Holt had a day, going 3-for-5 with a double, home run and five RBI. Harris and Will Wikner both had three hits as well.

Zachary Dennis picked up the win on the hill as he allowed just three hits through the final 4.0 innings of the contest.

Game 2: Cairn def. Penn College, 19-13 (BOX SCORE)

The runs came from all over in this contest, with the Highlanders scoring seven over the last three frames to secure the series win. Harris produced another solid outing as he went 4-for-6 with three RBI. Nathan Schurga went a perfect 4-for-4 from the dish, picking up five runs himself. Dylan Jackson racked up six RBI on two hits, one of which ebing a three run homer.

No. 6 Penn State Abington at No. 3 St. Mary’s College of Maryland

Game 1: St. Mary’s College def. Penn State Abington, 8-2 (BOX SCORE)

Abington came out of the gate firing, scoring both of their runs in the opening frame as Jake Fallers supplied a two RBI double. The Seahawks then corked the Abington offense and started instituting their own. The home side halved the lead in the second as Rhett Fletcher picked up an RBI single and then took their first lead in the fifth with a two-run stanza. Ian Walters added a run in the seventh on a solo shot and the Seahawks scored their final three runs in the eighth.
Ryan Chalk pitched a gem as he went the full 9.0 innings. He’d punch out six while just allowing seven hits en route to the win.

Game 2: St. Mary’s College def. Penn State Abington, 10-7 (BOX SCORE)

The Seahawks did all of their scoring through the first five innings, starting with a single run in the first. A pair of singles in the second made it 3-0 and an RBI double from Corey Brown in the third made it 4-0. The lead increased to 8-0 in the fourth as Walters, Berbakos and Fletcher all tallied an RBI. Abington was able to plate three of their own in the fifth, but the Seahawks countered with a two-run bottom of the frame.

The Seahawks offense cooled down after that allowing Abington to make a bid at the comeback. Corey DiMario cut the lead in half as he scored two on a single to right. Two more Nittany Lion runs came in the eighth but the bid to comeback fell short.

Jordan Bonhoff picked up the win on the mound, punching out nine batters over 5.1 innings of work. Anthony Walsh earned the save on the day, pitching a scoreless 1.1 innings with two strikeouts

No. 9 Wilson College at No. 1 Keystone College

Game 1: Keystone College def. Wilson College, 12-1 (BOX SCORE)

Scoring didn’t start until the fourth inning when Wilson was able to break the standstill with a Tyler Smith solo homer. The lead lasted only a moment though as the Giants answered in the bottom of the inning with a run scored on a wild pitch. Two innings later, Keystone took its first lead with a Nate Ewing RBI groundout. The eighth inning was when the top seed really turned on the offense as they plated their final 10 runs.

Sean Brennan kept his win streak alive (8-0), going 8.0 innings while only allowing seven hits.

Game 2 Keystone College def. Wilson College, 14-2 (BOX SCORE)

The Giants controlled the game right from the jump, scoring all 14 of their runs before Wilson could get one across. The Phoenix started the comeback bid in the ninth but it was too, little too late. Nine different Keystone players registered a hit including Chase Boyle and Ewing who both went 3-for-5 with an RBI. Andy Rivas had a pair of hits to go along with a pair of RBI.

Quinn Holt improved his record to 5-0 on the season as he allowed just six hit through 8.0 innings of work. He also punched out five batters along the way.

No. 10 Penn State Berks at No. 2 Penn State Harrisburg

Game 1: Penn State Harrisburg def. Penn State Berks, 15-1 (BOX SCORE)

Berks got the scoring started in the top of the opening frame, scoring on a Harrisburg error. The lead lasted only until the bottom of the frame as a Andrew Ruiz RBI double knotted things back up. Blaine Waltimyer then gave the Lions the lead in the second as a single through the right side drove in a run. Things began to open up in the third as Harrisburg tacked on five more followed by a four-run fourth. Up 11-1, Waltimyer homered in the sixth to add two more runs and a pair of runs sprinkled across the seventh and eighth completed the scoring for the home side.

Demetre Koutras III had quite the outing for Harrisburg, going 4-for-5 with a pair of runs scored. Dew Sassman added three hits and three RBI to the mix while Waltimyer garnered five RBI on his two extra-base knocks.

Fisher Druck got the win on the bump, tossing the first 6.0 innings. He’d only allow four hits while punching out 11 and maintaining a 0.00 ERA.

Game 2: Penn State Harrisburg def. Penn State Berks, 12-2 (BOX SCORE)

The game started off even with both sides plating a run in the first. Harrisburg took the lead in the bottom of the second as they added three runs to their score. Berks answered back with a one run third but that was all they could tally. Harrisburg would go on two score three in both the 6th and 7th and a pair in the fifth.

Waltimyer had another great contest, going 3-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored. Brendan Henn and Delcollo both had homers, combing for five RBI.

Christian Lubic II picked up the win on the hill, going the first 4.0 innings while just allowing three hits. Danny Eden then came in to relieve him with a 3.0 inning outing, punching out five without giving up a run.
