GANSEVOORT, N.Y. – The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) has announced its 2014 NEAC Women's Lacrosse All-Conference selections, with first, second and third team honors being awarded by position to a total of 36 student-athletes, as selected by the conference coaches.
The NEAC has also announced its individual award winners, which were also chosen by the conference coaches. Morrisville State College junior Shelby Wood (Duanesburg, N.Y.) was named the NEAC Offensive Player of the Year after a tremendous season for the Mustangs. The midfielder leads the conference in goals scored with 68 while adding 14 assists to rank second in total points with 82 through 17 contests, with those marks helping her become the Mustangs' all-time leader in both goals and points in just her third season of play. The two-time NEAC Offensive Player of the Week selection was also second in the conference with 77 draw controls, third in caused turnovers with 39 and scooped up the sixth-most groundballs with 55. Wood, who was the 2012 NEAC Rookie of the Year honoree, also landed on the NEAC All-Conference First Team for the third straight season.
Morrisville State College senior Cassie Edmondson (Oshawa, Ontario, Canada) was named the NEAC Defensive Player of the Year after also producing a fantastic season for the Mustangs. Edmonson leads the NEAC with 58 caused turnovers on the year while compiling the third-most groundballs with 78, with those numbers also placing her sixth and 13th nationally in those two respective categories. Her defensive efforts on the year landed her two NEAC Defensive Player of the Week accolades in addition to an ECAC Defensive Player of the Week honor en route to her fourth straight All-Conference selection. She also added some offense on the year, registering 31 points on 23 goals and eight assists in addition to 32 draw controls while appearing in all 17 Mustang contests.
A third Mustang claimed an individual honor, as Morrisville State freshman Hunter Waldau (Central Square, N.Y.) was named the NEAC Rookie of the Year. Waldau averaged 3.23 goals and 3.71 points per game in first collegiate season, while currently ranking first among conference rookies and third overall in total goals with 55 in addition to being sixth in points (61). She also led all players in free position goals with 11 on 16 such shots, while adding 37 groundballs and 12 draw controls. Waldau, who earned a NEAC Defensive Player of the Week award during the season, was also selected to the All-Conference First Team.
The three aforementioned Morrisville State honorees helped the Mustangs earn the second seed in the upcoming NEAC Tournament at 8-1 while producing an 11-6 overall record.
For the second straight season, Keuka College's Kelly Lickert was chosen by her peers as the NEAC Coach of the Year. Lickert led the defending-champion Storm to their second straight regular season conference championship with a perfect 9-0 record while going 13-2 overall. Her squad also scored 238 goals in those 15 contests for an average of 15.87 goals per game, which currently ranks 16th-best among all NCAA DIII programs. The Storm will now enter this weekend's conference championship tournament as the host and top seed.
