ST. MARY’S CITY, MD. - The top-seeded St. Mary’s College of Maryland women’s lacrosse team has punched their ticket to the AMCC/United East Crossover Championship as they downed No. 2 Wilson College, 24-2, Saturday afternoon.
The Seahawks got off to hot start, netting seven goals in the opening period. Six different players found the back of the net of St. Mary’s (Md.), led by Sanne Elling who scored two goals including the first goal of the game.
Wilson tried to battle back, with Sadie Fike scoring the first goal of the second quarter. The Seahawks prevent the Pheonix from finding any momentum, out scoring them 5-1 the rest of the quarter to build a 12-2 advantage at the half.
St. Mary’s (Md.) continued to push their advantage, adding four more goals in the third quarter. Meanwhile, their defense locked down Wilson’s offense attack, holding the Pheonix to seven shots in the second half. The Seahawks piled on eight goals in the fourth quarter, cruising to the 24-2 victory.
The Seahawks were led by Hope Harrison and Elling who each netted four goals. Carsyn Smith was a force defensively, scooping up eight ground balls and forcing five Pheonix turnovers.
Wilson was led by Alania Marek who scored one goal and registered one assist. Kaelyn Goff made 13 saves in goal for the Pheonix.
With the win, the Seahawks will now represent the United East in the AMCC/United East Crossover Championship, with the winner of that game earning an Automatic Qualifier for the NCAA tournament. Alfred State University defeated the University of Pitt-Bradford by a score of 16-3 to qualify for the crossover championship game. St. Mary’s College (Md.) will host the game on Saturday, May 2 at 2:00 PM.
