St. Mary's College (Md.) Falls in NCAA Tournament First Round

Glassboro, NJ – St. Mary’s College of Maryland Women’s Lacrosse fell in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to No. 12 University of Scranton by a score of 15-7 on Saturday, May 9.

The Royals jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, scoring twice in the opening minute of the game. The Seahawks settled down with Sanne Elling scoring her 44th goal of the season in the third minute. Sarah Fitter then capitalized on a free position opportunity, scoring to level the game at two. Scranton answered back, closing the quarter on a 4-0 run to take a 6-2 lead.

Scranton continued their run to start the second quarter, finding the back of the net three times to push their lead to seven. Hope Harrison stopped the run, scoring her 38th goal of the season. Fitter then scored her second goal of the game, pulling St. Mary’s back withing four goals. The Royals scored the final two goals of the half, holding an 11-4 advantage at the break.

St. Mary’s College (MD) found some success early in the third quarter, with Grace Maurice scoring four minutes into the half. Katelin Scala then found Fitter for her third goal of the game, making the score 12-6. The Royals responded, scoring the final two goals to close out the quarter. In the final quarter, Scala found Maurice for one final goal. The Seahawks could not mount a rally, falling 15-7.

The Seahawks were led by Fitter who recorded a hattrick, scoring three times on five shots. Carsyn Smith collected a team-high four ground balls and forced four turnovers. In goal, Allie Greeley made 12 saves.
