NEAC Announces 2017-18 Women's Tennis All-Conference Team and Annual Awards
CLARKS SUMMIT, Pa. – The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) has announced its 2017-18 Women’s Tennis All-Conference selections, which were determined during the individual tournament that was held at the Birchwood Tennis Club on Thursday and Friday. The 2017-18 women’s tennis individual awards were also announced at the conclusion of the women’s tournament on Friday afternoon.
The individual tournament consisted of the top-four seeded student-athletes for first through sixth singles and first through third doubles. Each flight saw the No. 1 seed take on the No. 4 seed and the No. 2 seed take on the No. 3 seed. The first-round winners advanced to the championship round, which produced six singles champions and three doubles champions, with those student-athletes also making up the All-Conference First Team. The runners-up from each flight in the championship round made up the All-Conference Second Team, while the All-Conference Third Team consists of the winners of each flight from the consolation bracket.
Lancaster Bible sophomore Greta Strunk (Lebanon, Pa.) earned NEAC Player of the Year honors for the second-straight season to become the first back-to-back individual champion in Chargers’ history. Strunk, who came in to the tournament as the top-seeded individual player, defeated Bryn Athyn College’s Morgan Phillips (Annville, Pa.) in Thursday’s semifinals by a score of 6-1, 6-2. In the final match of Friday afternoon, Strunk topped Alyssa Miller (Delta, Pa.) from Penn State Berks by a score of 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 1 singles championship. Strunk also earned a spot on the NEAC All-Conference First Team and finished the year with an overall singles record of 12-2, which included a 7-0 mark against NEAC opponents.
Penn State Berks sophomore Alyssa Miller (Delta, Pa.) was named NEAC Rookie of the Year after landing on the All-Conference Second Team at No. 1 singles. Miller defeated Penn State Abington’s Stephanie Jin (Bluebell, Pa.), 6-0, 6-2, in Thursday’s semifinal before dropping the No. 1 singles championship match to Strunk. Miller is the second player from Penn State Berks to receive NEAC Rookie of the Year honors.
Penn State Berks head coach Scott Yarnell was named NEAC Coach of the Year after a vote by the league coaches. In his 14th year as the women’s coach, Yarnell led the Nittany Lions to their ninth conference title and will take his team to its first NCAA Division III Tournament appearance. This year’s award marks the eighth time Yarnell has been Coach of the Year and first time since the 2014-15 season.
