LATHAM, N.Y. - The United East has announced the Women’s Lacrosse All-Conference Teams for the 2022 season. All-Conference consists of a First and Second Team made up of 13 student-athletes (3 Attack, 3 Midfielders, 3 Defense, 1 Goalie, 1 Faceoff Specialist, 1 Long Stick Midfielder, 1 Short Stick Midfielder).
The conference has also doled out its major awards, including Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year and Coach of the Year. Those were awarded to the following:
Offensive Player of the Year - Lucy Gussio (St. Mary’s College of Maryland)
Defensive Player of the Year - Mary Kate Fitz-Patrick (St. Mary’s College of Maryland)
Rookie of the Year - Cameron Briggs (Medaille College)
Coach of the Year - Cheri Horst (Lancaster Bible College)
Gussio powered one of the best offenses in the country, helping the Seahawks earn the Regular Season Title in their first year in the league. The senior tallied109 points on the year, which ranks 12th in all of Division III. Of those 109, 49 were on assists which is currently the 15th most in the country. Gussio also knew how to score though, piling in multiple goals in every game except one this year. To add to the stat sheet, the Baldwin, Md. native registered 33 groundballs and 10 caused turnovers. One of her top performances came in a win over Washington College as she found the back of the net seven times while assisting on five other goals.
Fitz-Patrick helped anchor a defense that didn’t allow more than three goals in any conference tilt, including two shutouts. The senior was unflapple from her defensive position causing 20 turnovers which ranked second on her Seahawk squad. Fitz-Patrick also collected 33 ground balls on the year. Her best outing came in a 25-0 win over SUNY Morrisville as she caused five turnovers and scooped up six ground balls (both season highs).
Briggs was a large part of the Mavericks success the season, excelling on both sides of the field. The first year battled for every 50–50 ball, finishing the year with a league-high 73. Her 4.87 groundballs per game ranked 14th in the nation. Briggs could also be found in the goal-scorers column as she piled in a team-high 55 this season. To round out the stat sheet, the West Seneca N.Y. native controlled 76 draws, which was the second most for Medaille. One of Briggs’ top performances of the season came in a win over Alfred University as she finished with seven goals, seven draw controls and 1 assist.
For the second-straight season, Coach Cheri Horst was tabbed the Coach of the Year as she led her Chargers to a 10-4 record (5-1 United East). Horst helped her team focus on set pieces as her 59.1% success rate on the free position ranked first in the conference and fourth in Division III. That aided in the team's scoring offense, which ranks 48th in the nation at 15.12 goals per game. This year, Coach Horst guided four players to All-Conference accolades.
