LATHAM, N.Y. - The United East has released its 2023 Women’s Lacrosse All-Conference teams as well as its major award winners. All-Conference consists of a First and Second Team made up of 12 student-athletes (3 Attack, 3 Midfielders, 3 Defense, 1 Goalie, 2 At-Large).
The conference has also doled out its major awards, including Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year and Coach of the Year. Those were awarded to the following:
Offensive Player of the Year - Hailey Betch (St. Mary’s College of Maryland)
Defensive Player of the Year - Rachael Freeman (St. Mary’s College of Maryland)
Rookie of the Year - Katelin Scala (St. Mary’s College of Maryland)
Coach of the Year - Brittney Morris (St. Mary’s College of Maryland)
Betch has been a main source of offense for the Seahawks all season, scoring at least one goal in all 17 games and registering at least one assist in 14 of them. This year, Betch has racked up 89 points which not only leads the conference, but ranks 29th in all of Division III. The sophomore has collected points multiple ways, leading the United East in assists (29) and goals (60). One of her top outings came in the season opening win against Stockton University as she scored nine goals, assisted on one other and controlled nine draws. The Severna Park, Md. native bookended the season with weekly accolades, earning Offensive Player of the Week on the opening weekend and the final weekend of the regular season.
Freeman played a pivotal role in a defensive scheme that allowed just 12 goals in conference play all season. The Baltimore, Md. native started all 17 games for the Seahawks, Freeman caused a team-leading 20 turnovers. Freeman finished out her caused turnovers as well as her 47 groundballs topped the entire conference. One of her top outings came in a non-conference tilt with Denison as she caused two turnovers and scooped six groundballs. The defender is also a perfect 3–for-3 on her shots, scoring on all three of her shot attempts.
Scala made an immediate impact for the Seahawks, starting in all but one game this season. The first year piled up 46 points on the season, the fourth most in the conference. Of those 46, half of them were tallied as assists which ranked second only behind her teammate Hailey Betch. Where Scala dominated was on the restart as her 55 draw controls ranked third in the conference and first amongst her own squad. Perhaps her best performance came in the regular season finale against Wells College as she honed in a season-best 11 draws while recording seven points on three goals and four assists..
Morris guided her team to a perfect conference record (5-0), earning the Regular Season title for the second-straight season. This year, the Seahawks worked to distribute the ball with cause as the squad’s 7.94 assists per game not only topped the conference, but is also the 24th best average in Division III. Morris coached the Seahawks to the most goals scored in conference play (115) while allowing the least (12). Morris also saw nine members of her team earn All-Conference honors and eight members be named to the weekly honor roll.
