LATHAM, N.Y. - The United East has announced a conference-wide partnership with Chi Alpha Sigma, a National College Athlete Honor Society that recognizes excellence in both athletics and academics.
"Initiating a conference-wide partnership with Chi Alpha Sigma continues to enhance the United East's emphasis on academic excellence and the Division III philosoph," stated Stephanie Dutton, Commissioner of the United East Conference. "This partnership will ensure all 17 conference members have the ability to establish chapters on their respective campuses and celebrate the outstanding achievements of our student-athletes in the classroom."
Founded in 1996, Chi Alpha Sigma is the first and only nonprofit organization to recognize both the academic and athletic achievements of four-year undergraduate student-athletes. The organization currently boasts more than 450 chapters across 47 states.
"The United East Conference is such a large and diverse group of institutions within NCAA Division III. Chi Alpha Sigma welcomes the opportunity to work with all of their colleges and universities to highlight the outstanding accomplishments of their student-athletes and athletics programs,” announced Kellen Wells-Mangold, Chi Alpha Sigma Executive Director. “I am grateful to the conference for providing this as a benefit to their member schools."
To be eligible for membership, student-athletes must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or higher, complete at least four full-time semesters, be a junior or senior in academic standing, participate in a varsity intercollegiate sport, and showcase excellent character and citizenship.
Benefits for members include being eligible for national awards and postgraduate scholarships offered by Chi Alpha Sigma in addition to the ability to receive graduation regalia such as medallions, cords, and lapel pins.
