LATHAM, N.Y. - The top seeds in both Divisions advanced as the 2024 United East Women’s Tennis Championship kicked off on Tuesday Afternoon. In the top-seeded Penn State Harrisburg blanked No. 4 Penn State Abington, 5-0, while No. 2 St. Mary’s College of Maryland did the same to No. 3 Lancaster Bible College.
In the Skye Division, No. 1 Cairn University upended No. 4 Clarks Summit University, 5-0, while Notre Dame of Maryland University came out with a 5-1 win over Bryn Athyn College.
The two sides will host their Divisional Finals as a Skye and Volt crown will be handed out on Saturday. Harrisburg and St. Mary’s College are scheduled to compete at . Cairn and Notre Dame will go to battle at 1 p.m.
VOLT DIVISION
No. 1 Penn State Harrisburg def. No. 4 Penn State Abington, 5-0
Harrisburg got off to a quick 3-0 start as the three Lion pairings combined to only drop two games in doubles play. The team then finished in lockstep in singles play with Olivia Bandini (2nd), Breanna DeSantis (3rd), Sophia Bandini (4th) and Anita Liu (5th) all finished either 6-0, 6-0 or 6-1, 6-0.
No. 2 St. Mary’s College of Maryland def. No. 3 Lancaster Bible College
The Chargers found themselves as a disadvantage early as they were forced to forfeit third doubles. Amber Manspeaker and Cleopatra Solomon (1st) and Ellie Walter and Giselle Harris (2nd) took care of business in the other doubles slots to help notch a big lead. Solomon would end up nabbing the clinching match as she won 6-1, 6-1 from the first flight.
SKYE DIVISION
No. 1 Cairn University def. No. 4 Clarks Summit University
A couple of forfeits on the Defender side gave Cairn a quick lead but the match was clinched with a pair of shutout wins. Ersy Neal and Reagan Griffith got the victory at first doubles while Rachel Campbell-Roberston and Laney Boutin picked up the win at second doubles.
No. 2 Notre Dame of Maryland def. No. 3 Bryn Athyn College
Mimicking the first three semifinal matches, the eventual match victor took all three doubles matches. Mackenzie Lookingland and Allyson Geckle had the most commanding victory, winning 8-1 from the second flight. Ma. Lookingland (1st) and her sister Morgan Lookingland then sealed the matches with singles victories.
Annae Connelly was able to steal a win for the Lions as she won at second singles 6-0, 6-4.
