Falcons Advance in Opening Round of Women's Lacrosse Championship

LATHAM, N.Y. - The 2024 United East Women’s Lacrosse Championship opened on Saturday morning with Cedar Crest taking a narrow 13-12 victory over Notre Dame of Maryland on the campus of Cedar Crest College. Abi Sipel’s goal with 4:13 left in the 4th quarter was the decider as the Falcons came back from a 8-5 halftime deficit to claim victory and move onto the semi-final round Wednesday afternoon.

With Saturday morning’s matchup between the 4-seed Cedar Crest and the 5-seed Notre Dame of Maryland, the host Falcons opened up with three quick goals to take a 3-0 lead early in the 1st period.  However, the Gators stormed back with two quick goals to make it a 3-2 game at the end of the quarter and won the 2nd period 6-2 to take an 8-5 lead into halftime. Cedar Crest won the 3rd period 5-1 and took a slim 10-9 lead into the 4th and final period. 

The two teams traded goals throughout the fourth quarter until Sipel’s winner with just over four minutes left on the clock.  From there, the Falcons played defense and held off the Gators attack to finish off the win.

Sipel led the Falcons with 5 goals on 9 shots while Maddie Graham pitched in 4 goals and an assist.  Notre Dame was led by Emma Alascia’s 6 goals and an assist alongside Jade Stewart’s 4 goals and two assists.

Cedar Crest now advances to play at the top-seeded St. Mary’s College of Maryland on Wednesday, May 1.  The time of the game is TBD.
